TP Sensor Explained: Function, Symptoms & How to Test Honda PGM-FI Throttle Position Sensor

TP Sensor Explained Function Symptoms How to Test Honda PGM-FI Throttle Position Sensor - Jerking Hesitation MIL 8-1

Continuation of our PGM-FI Series after MAP Sensor: What is TP Sensor? What is its function? And what are symptoms of failure?

What is TP Sensor?

TP = Throttle Position Sensor. Mounted on throttle body, connected directly to throttle valve shaft. It's a potentiometer (variable resistor) that tells ECU how far you open the throttle grip - from 0% (closed) to 100% (full open).

Function in PGM-FI

  • Acceleration Enrichment: When you snap throttle open quickly, TP signals ECU to add extra fuel instantly - prevents hesitation
  • Idle Detection: TP closed = ECU goes to idle fuel map
  • Deceleration Fuel Cut: TP closed at high RPM = ECU cuts fuel to save fuel
  • Works with MAP & IAT: TP + MAP + IAT = accurate load calculation

Symptoms of Bad TP Sensor (Bule Search Terms)

1. MIL Code 8-1 or 1-2

Honda MIL 8 blinks = TP sensor circuit malfunction

2. Jerking / Hesitation When Opening Throttle

Most common. Bike hesitates or jerks when you twist throttle from idle. Because TP signal jumps irregularly.

3. Unstable Idle / Stalling

ECU thinks throttle is slightly open when it's closed - idle becomes high or unstable.

4. Poor Fuel Economy

TP stuck at high reading = ECU always adds fuel.

5. No Power at Full Throttle

TP never reaches full open voltage = ECU never gives full fuel.

How to Test TP Sensor with Multimeter

Reference Voltage

Key ON, Engine OFF. 3 wires: 5V reference (Yellow/Red), Ground (Green/Orange), Signal (Red/Yellow varies). Measure 5V reference: Should be ~5.0V.

Signal Voltage Test

  • Throttle closed (idle): Signal should be 0.4-0.6V
  • Throttle slowly open to full: Voltage should rise SMOOTHLY to ~3.5-4.5V
  • If voltage jumps, drops, or stuck = bad TP sensor
  • Use analog multimeter or graphing - digital may be too slow to see jumps

Resistance Test (Unplugged)

Measure between signal and ground pins while rotating throttle shaft by hand. Resistance should change smoothly from ~1k to ~4k ohm. Any open = bad.

How to Fix

  1. Check connector for water - TP is low mounted, gets wet
  2. Check throttle cable free play - too tight holds TP slightly open
  3. Do NOT adjust TP position unless you have manual - it is factory calibrated
  4. If bad, replace throttle body assembly or sensor (depending on model - some Honda TP is not sold separately)
  5. After replacement, do TP reset: Key ON, fully open and close throttle 2-3 times, then idle for 2 minutes
